More About Super Visa Insurance Cost

If your children and grandchildren live in Canada, the Super Visa makes long visits possible. Here's what you need to apply.

If you have children and grandchildren settled in Canada, the Super Visa lets you visit them for long stays with a single multiple-entry visa. Since its introduction in 2011 it has become the most popular way for parents and grandparents to spend extended time with family.

What the insurance must cover

  • At least $100,000 of coverage for health care, hospitalization and repatriation.
  • Valid for at least one year from the date of entry — and valid each time you enter.
  • Proof of coverage may be checked by the border officer, so keep your confirmation handy.

Other things you'll need

  • An immigration medical exam.
  • Proof of your relationship to the Canadian citizen or permanent resident you're visiting.
  • A signed letter of invitation from your child or grandchild.
  • Proof that your host meets the minimum income requirement.

What it costs

The insurance premium is usually the biggest expense. It depends on age, health, coverage amount and deductible. Comparing insurers is the simplest way to find the right balance of price and protection.
